DIS ORDER

A POETIC DOCU-FICTION SHOW ABOUT EATING DISORDERS

DIS ORDER

In Dis Order, Cat looks back on her youth. She was a pretty girl who did what she was told, even when it didn't feel right. “I guess I’ll have to,” she thought. And she thought that far too often, in all kinds of situations. She calls herself a pleaser. The voice in her head, which she calls Anna, helps her to cope in the situations she gets herself into under the guise of I guess I’ll have to'. But with time that voice is getting angrier, meaner and more destructive.

Dis Order is a psychological drama about eating disorders inspired by the diaries of Cat Smits and the scientific research of Marlies Rekkers, who was Smits' psychologist 15 years ago. The performance is partly autobiographical and made into fiction by Christine Otten. Dis Order combines puppetry, acting and dance with film images by Sunny Bergman. This combination ensures that the audience is taken into the inner struggle that every person knows to a greater or lesser extent in a moving way; the battle between light and darkness.

Theaterkrant: "The physical, beautiful play about a complicated, troubled inner world and Bergman's shockingly down-to-earth, often witty documentary input form a fascinating combination that lifts the piece far beyond a straightforward ego document."

Marek Waszkiel: “It is not often that an actor is endowed with such exceptional magnetic power. I have seen Smits on stage many times, in various performances. However it was only in Dis Order that I came under her direct spell. It catches the eye, exudes energy, charms with it's stage action, voice timbre, smile and delights with puppet animation.

Dis order is an extraordinary spectacle.

Dis Order can have a strong therapeutic effect. And performances of high artistry and exceptional social significance are truly a rarity”.
